Plant Adaptation Biology Laboratory
Hokkaido University
Welcome to the website of the Plant Adaptation Biology Lab!
In our laboratory, we study photosynthesis and its related metabolism such as chlorophyll metabolism or nitrogen assimilation. In particular, we focus on the adaptation mechanisms of plants and algae to various environments such as low temperature, drought or changing light intensities using various techniques of biochemistry, molecular biology and bioinformatics. Our main research projects emcompass the following topics:
- Acclimation of photosynthetic organisms including herbs, evergreen trees, mosses, green algae and cyanobacteria to various environments such as low temperatures
- Evolution of photosynthetic organisms.
- Biogenesis of photosystems.
- Chlorophyll biosynthesis and breakdown
- Regulation of nitrogen metabolism in plants
Please do not hesitate to contact us for more detaild information of the current research topics in our laboratory.

About Our Laboratory
The strength of our laboratory lies in the collaboration of the following four faculty members who are dedicated to both research and education. This allows the students to learn and incorporate techniques from molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and physiological ecology into their research.
- Dr. Ryouichi Tanaka
- Dr. Atsushi Takabayashi
- Dr. Hisashi Ito
- Dr. Kiyomi Ono
We believe that correctly elucidating natural phenomena is of primary importance in natural science. Our aim is to teach students to think deeply and logically, and to carefully uncover the mechanisms behind biological processes. Since all of these processes are interconnected in various ways, it is also important to learn how the biological processes you are researching are connected to other processes.
Ryouichi Tanaka, Professor
